Another Archive Going Digital

An interesting article from the Post--The Rolling Stone magazine archive is going digital (for a price), but it's going to be a great source of the history of cultural trends!

Something Not A/V Related, but Tech

While getting ready this morning, I caught a quick segment of the Today Show. Normally, features during the 8am hour don't catch my attention, but this one was about mom blogs (a growing trend in overall blogging), but more importantly, blogging with integrity. The repercussions of negative, disrespectful, and anonymous blog comments have been in the news so it seems fitting to feature the site. I've had several different blogs over the past decade, writing about several different topics, and I've been involved in social networking sites since 2004. In my personal observations, it appears like the trend of anonymous rudeness on blogs and other social networking sites is unfortunately growing.

It amounts to this: be nice. :-)

Some Interesting Articles

I was reading The Express (a portable version of The Washington Post) on my way to work this morning and stumbled upon a great story from the NBC Archives. I just love when old film is found and preserved.

I also found this article today, from the Houston Chronicle, via The Librarian's Guide to Etiquette. Shhh!

This Reminds Me...

Two short articles.

From NPR's Picture Show: "Find Me A Dodo...". (This reminds me of a few requests I've gotten...)

From NPR's On The Media: "Librarians Gone Wild." (I can relate!)

Vintage Ads

So a friend sent me this great site for vintage ads... You know what I always say... There's nothing better than the Aeolian-Vocalion!

Something Cool That Isn't A/V-Related

CUA's Rembrandt is featured in the exhibit "Fine Lines: Discovering a Rembrandt and Other Old Masters at Catholic University," which was created by my colleague Leslie Knoblauch. The painting is also featured in an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

A Little Archiving From My Hometown...

I just saw a story on the AMIA listserv on preserving archival footage from WQED, a local broadcasting company in Pittsburgh, PA. The preservation action was performed by Preservation Technologies (a cool place to tour if you get the chance!) in Cranberry, PA, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. If you're familiar with WQED, you know they produced such amazing shows as Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (which are being preserved), along with many other PBS productions.

This grant-funded project is a rare opportunity for a public station because these types of stations cannot afford a project on this scale using their typical operating budget.

I can't wait to see the result of this mass digitization project!

Library of Congress Saves Films!

On the Media--Film Buff

The Library of Congress has established a National Film Registry to preserve the legacy of some of the best films of all time, but among the submissions were orphan films--historical films, corporate films, and ameteur art/music films that are little known, often not associated with an author, causing them to be forgotten about and rarely preserved. With the Library of Congress's help, these films are being preserved and digitized, saving a legacy otherwise not known.

NPR: On the Media did a story on these orphan films.

The best of both loves...

Here's a story I found on Slate about the vaudeville singer Eva Tanguay, who has faded into obscurity, but was really one of the premiere US "rock stars" in the early 1900s! I also loved the slide show of old photographs. The digitization was done very well. I could almost smell the deteriorating paper backing! Anyway, this story combines a lot of my "loves"... Old photographs, vaudeville and historic music theater, and old recordings!

Jon Stewart on Archives

I usually love your commentary, Jon Stewart, but this short clip just reinforces my post from yesterday: normal people do not understand the Archives profession, especially the A/V Archives profession! I'm angry they didn't do their research first before making fun of this position, but I can't really blame them. The combination of DeadHead and archivist do go against most societal norms. Despite that, I know quite a few archivists that have applied for this position since it appeared on the ARSC listserv on Monday!

"A Masters in Archives Management? What does that even mean?"
