So, during my frustration today I decided to check out resources available through my professional organizations, namely SAA and ARSC. ARSC has been the primary source of all my resources for audio preservation, and I was stunned when I realized that on the list of archive and archive-related organizations available on the SAA website, ARSC and IASA aren't even mentioned! The two largest audio-related professional associations aren't mentioned! No wonder SAA doesn't offer much guidance with audio preservation and digitization! They don't know what's out there! SAA fail!

ARSC, and My Reason For Going To ARSC
It's official! I'm going to ARSC! I just booked my hotel, will be booking my flight soon (go Southwest!), and have nearly finalized my travel grant application (just some last-minute reviewing for the perfectionist in me that always finds one more thing to change).
In between working with my student assistant and my practicum student, I was also able to work on (and pretty much finish) one more section of the Archive's new audio policy. I briefly discussed this policy with my boss and co-workers, and once I have this done (maybe by the end of the week?), I'm also going to approach the Library Director and the Library IT for memory recommendations, and maybe to develop a hard drive memory acquisitions plan. I've recently used a huge amount of memory (as stated in a previous post) transferring digital photos from one campus office, and if we go forward with this audio digitization plan, we need to make sure I don't come that close to maxing out memory.

You May Think It's Pronounced A-R-S-C, But It's Not...
ARSC. My favorite professional association.
I got another reminder via the listserv to book my flight and hotel for the ARSC Conference in May, saying that a lot of airlines were having better deals on flights right now. It's true! I priced flights about a month ago at around $350, and now I can fly (Southwest) for about $270. It's good because that will have to be on my credit card for a while!
I spent a large part of the day getting my travel grant application together because CUA cannot afford to pay for most of the expense, and I definitely can't. I'm going to review everything tomorrow, email a pdf (since I have that option) once I am completely happy with my letter. Compiling this grant gave me a good opportunity to review and update my resume, and practice writing a cover letter.
I've also spent a portion of the day negotiating conference and expenses with my boss and the library director (I'd rather go to ARSC than SAA. ARSC is better. I think we should not ask for the entire grant amount and say that CUA can pay for certain expenses so they might be more willing to give me what I ask for. ARSC is awesome!). I didn't saw ARSC was awesome, but it definitely is.
Now all I have to hope for is that a lot of other people don't apply for this grant, or I'm deserving enough to receive it.
